A fearless penguin, however, was a bit distracted by a rustle in a nearby bush and separated from the group to inspect.

He stuck his head in the undergrowth before giving up his quest and joining his friends at Matsue Vogel Park in Shimane.

The video garnered over 100,000 Facebook likes from awestruck penguin fans.

But others questioned the “cruel” treatment of birds.

One user wrote: “It’s not cute poor people have no choice here, ditch the jackets and let them be natural and cute penguins.”

Another viewer added: “Disgusting… they are or should be wild birds, not toys!”

The most prevalent religion in Japan is Shintoism with only 2.3% of them identifying as Christians, but Christmas is widely celebrated.
